Traps, Tricks & Mistakes: Eccentric Development
This post is a collaboration with Mr Andrew Crosby who is an expert in chess gambits. Andrew usually plays them in his games with great success. He is also a member of our virtual Chess.com club and takes active part in our online tournaments and matches.
The development of pieces is the most important principle in the opening. When that development is coherent, the chances of success are good. But if development follows personal desire rather than the spirit of the position, then disaster comes soon.
In today’s game, each side plays the opening developing their pieces at different speeds. And that makes the difference in terms of the initiative.
It’s worth noticing White’s brave decision to trade the queen for three minor pieces in order to take advantage of his better activity.
I hope you find today’s game useful as an example of how to develop (or not develop) pieces in your games.
