Karoli Lwanga wins 9th Capablanca Cup
Karoli Lwanga put up a spirited performance when he won the 9th edition of the Capablanca Cup over the weekend. Lwanga scored 5.0 points out of 6 games in Open Section. This section had a total of 10 players and he went home with KES 15,000 (USD 150).
James Panchol was the runners up in the Open Section and he went home with KES 10,000. Collins Young was the 2nd runners up and he won KES 6,000.
Ronald Bolo on the other hand won the U1800 with 5.5 points as well out of 6 games. He went home with KES 10,000.
Sumit Deshpande, Elvis Likoko, and Anthony Kionga all tied for 2nd place and each went home with KES 3,500.
Event details
The event attracted a total of 60 players of which 10 were in the Open Section & 50 in the U1700 Section.
The total prize fund of this event was an impressive KES 60,000 (USD 600).
Dr Mujahid Din was the main sponsor (KES 20,000) of this event in honour of his late father Mohamed Younis Din who was a chess enthusiast in his days. Other co-sponsors included Peter Gilruth & Hiram Gakembu.
The time control was 90 minutes to finish the game and the event had a total of 6 rounds which were played over the weekend at the renown Goan Gymkhana Club.
Nairobi Chess Club which is the oldest registered chess club in the country were the organisers of this prestigious event
Next event
Nairobi Chess Club’s next event is the 4th edition of the Peter Le Pelley Cup in late February. This event is held in honour of one of the past Chairman’s of the club – the late Peter Le Pelley.
