The Chess Club Friesen in Berlin (Germany) organizes every summer the well-attended international tournament “Lichtenberger Sommer”. Every year around 200 players take part in that competition. Because of an open event, participants of all categories have the chance to play against titled masters. In year 2024, 184 players from 19 different federations took part. They came mainly from European countries (96%) but there were also representatives from India, Brazil, Colombia, China, USA and South Africa. 10 of them were titled players.
Facing a titled master is a unique experience for learning. It’s like a free lesson with a private coach. But if additionally you come prepared, the lesson has an extra benefit. Even the underrated player can surprise the master.
There are amateur players who love chess and they spend time studying all aspects of the game. They are always excited about a game against a master. Today’s game is an example. The game corresponds to round 3 of “Lichtenberger Sommer 2024”. It’s worth noting that both players belong to different generations. While Jordi Herms is a veteran chess player, Clemens Escher is a promising youngster who exceeds his rival in 150 rating points. However, Herms is a chess enthusiast and went well prepared for the fight.
