Traps, Tricks & Mistakes: The Venomous King’s Gambit

The King’s Gambit is an opening out of the top competition today. Nevertheless, it was very popular in the ‘romantic period’ of chess history, more than 200 years ago.

In the King’s Gambit, White offers an early pawn in order to divert Black from controlling the centre.

It’s not an easy opening and, despite it’s out of ‘serious’ competition, is a powerful weapon in blitz chess. Both players confront usually sharp variations in which a slight slip brings to a sudden collapse.

In today’s example, the great Kasparov faced this opening in a rapid game against English player Nigel Short. And in fact, the game was really short, with Kasparov defeated in only 15 moves:
