Traps, Tricks & Mistakes: Mortimer Trap Aborted

In a previous post, I have presented the Mortimer trap.

In today’s example, Black plays for that trap, but White comes with an unexpected move preventing it. Black gets confused and is unable to find the right answer.

The player having the black pieces was frustrated in view of his/her trap aborted and couldn’t see the easy checkmate.

That is what can happen to players who memorize a sequence of moves without understanding the reason behind them.
