Traps, Tricks & Mistakes: Milan Vidmar Trap

The King’s Indian Defence (KID) came into existence during the “hypermodern” era of the 1920s and achieve the pinnacle of fame when Fischer became World Champion.

Despite ignoring an important classical strategical principle like control of the centre, KID is a reliable and sound opening. It was Kasparov’s main defence weapon.

It’s not expectable to find traps in the first moves of this opening… except today’s pitfall, which appeared for the first time in 1925 and leads to weakening White’s position.

Today’s trap is difficult to see and one that has taken many victims.

But Kasparov, who was an expert in this opening, didn’t see this trap in one of his games. See by yourself:
