Continuing our survey of interesting games from the NCC Closed Championship, here’s an example of a nontraditional opening strategy that turns into an unbalanced endgame.
One of the more underrated endgame skills is knowing your role. Which is to say, are you playing for a win or a draw? Black’s entire endgame hinged on understanding his role, at first needing to push for a win, and then needing to play for a draw. Playing for the wrong thing at the wrong time was what led to Black losing.
