Traps, Tricks & Mistakes: Knight vs Rook
Gustav Neumann (1838-1881) was a German chess master and during the late 1860s one of the best players in the world. However, he abandoned the practice of chess from 1872 because of severe mental illness. Together with Adolf Anderssen founded the German chess magazine “Neue Berliner Schachzeitung”.
Among his best results, he finished 1st in Berlin (1865), Elberfeld (1865) and Dundee (1867); 4th in Paris (1867) and 3rd/4th in Baden-Baden (1870). In this last tournament, he lost against Steinitz an endgame that nowadays most chess players know is a draw.
This game was extremely long, lasting for twelve hours according to press records. With such a marathon, you can imagine that players were exhausted and prone to make mistakes.
